The eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) is a large marsupial of eastern and southeastern Australia. It inhabits forests, woodland and grassy plains where open feeding grounds adjoin shaded resting sites. It has grey fur, powerful hindlimbs and a long, heavy tail.
It chiefly eats grasses and low plants. Feeding is most frequent at night, dawn and cooler times of day; it rests in shade during heat. Its characteristic leaps are powered by the hindlimbs, with the tail helping balance.
It forms loose groups called mobs, whose membership can change. Young are born at an early developmental stage and continue growing in the mother's pouch. Gradual emergence allows exploration while maintaining close contact with the female.
