Common garter snake — size comparison — facts and sources

The common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) inhabits North American meadows, woodland edges and waterside habitats. Pale stripes often run along its back and sides against a darker background.

Aquatic and terrestrial prey allow it to use different parts of the landscape, from wet meadows to the edges of water bodies. It actively searches its surroundings using chemical information collected by its tongue.

It eats earthworms, amphibians and other small animals. It gives birth to live young. In colder parts of its range it may overwinter in shelters shared by many individuals.
