The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The eastern chipmunk lives mainly on the ground, although it climbs trees well. It selects forests and scrub with stumps, rocks or fallen wood. These provide cover while moving between burrow entrances and feeding places.
It transports seeds and nuts in cheek pouches. It places stores in underground chambers and scattered caches. Fruit, fungi and invertebrates supplement its diet. It is active by day and remains mainly underground in winter, alternating torpor with use of stored food.
It usually lives alone and defends the immediate burrow surroundings. The female bears young in a sheltered chamber; offspring initially cannot see and lack fur. Distinctive alarm calls help respond to predators. Underground passages may include separate resting and storage rooms.
