The eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina) is a chiefly terrestrial turtle of eastern United States forests, leaf litter and damp ground. Yellow or orange markings cover its dark, highly domed shell.
A movable lower-shell section tightly shields its withdrawn head and limbs. It uses cover beneath logs and leaves and may bury itself in hot weather.
Activity often increases after rain. It eats fruit, fungi and varied invertebrates. The female lays eggs in soil. Adults spend winter in shelters.
