Dwarf sperm whale — size comparison — facts and sources
The dwarf sperm whale, Kogia sima, inhabits oceanic waters over continental slopes and deeper seabeds. Resemblance to the pygmy sperm whale makes reliable identification from boats difficult. Their separate status was established in classification only in the twentieth century.
It occurs alone or in small groups, diving for squid and fish and using echolocation to find prey. Brief, inconspicuous surfacing conceals much activity from surface observers.
