The dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) is a small crocodile of swamp forests in western and central Africa. Dark skin and a compact build suit small, shaded waterways.
Forest shelters provide daytime cover; after dark it may leave the water to seek food. It is active mainly at dusk and night, using cover in the forest understorey.
It eats fish, crustaceans and small vertebrates. A female builds a nesting mound and remains beside it.
