Dugong — size comparison — facts and sources

The dugong is a herbivorous marine mammal of warm, shallow Indo-Pacific waters. It has a spindle-shaped body, small pectoral flippers and a tail divided into two flukes. Its broad, downward-facing muzzle suits bottom feeding. It is most often found near seagrass meadows.

It chiefly eats seagrasses, uprooting or cropping plants. It may leave clear feeding trails on soft bottoms. It lives alone, with a calf or in small groups, although rich feeding grounds can attract larger numbers. It surfaces regularly to breathe.

A female usually bears one calf and remains in close contact for a long time. Slow reproduction hinders recovery after losses. Dugongs depend strongly on seagrass availability, so habitat degradation directly reduces their food supply.

Diugoń wypasa łąki trawy morskiej szerokim skierowanym w dół pyskiem, pozostawiając charakterystyczne bruzdy w osadzie. Naturalne środowisko gatunku obejmuje płytkie zatoki i przybrzeżne łąki trawy morskiej. W jego diecie znajdują się przede wszystkim trawy morskie. Typowy sposób życia można opisać jako: zwykle samotnie, w parach lub małych stadach. Gruba skóra bywa porośnięta glonami i nosi jasne blizny. Status ochrony określono jako: narażony (iucn: vu). Zestaw tych cech pokazuje związek budowy ciała z siedliskiem, zdobywaniem pokarmu i codziennym zachowaniem dorosłych zwierząt. Plansza skaluje zwierzę do 300 cm długości całkowitej. Około 95 cm wysokości pokazanej sylwetki wynika z jej naturalnych proporcji i postawy, a nie z osobnej normy gatunku.
