The domestic ferret is a domesticated mustelid with a long, flexible body and short limbs. Its history is linked to the European polecat. Older sources use Mustela putorius furo, while Mustela furo is also used today. Domestic varieties differ in fur colour and the prominence of the dark facial mask.
It is carnivorous. It uses smell to explore its surroundings, readily investigating crevices and passages, and its flexible build helps it move through confined spaces. Periods of intense activity alternate with long rests.
Males and females differ in average build, and coat appearance also changes seasonally. The animals communicate through scent, calls and body posture.
