The desert iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis) inhabits hot United States and Mexican deserts and sandy areas with shrubs. Pale colouring blends with sand, and a long tail assists balance.
It tolerates high temperatures and may feed at midday. It climbs shrubs for food and finds shelter in burrows.
It eats chiefly leaves, flowers and other plant food. During fast running it lifts its body above the substrate. Females lay eggs in suitably sheltered places.
