Merriam's kangaroo rat — size comparison — facts and sources
Merriam's kangaroo rat has powerful hind legs and a tufted tail. It inhabits deserts and dry scrub of southwestern North America. At night it collects seeds and carries them in external cheek pouches; it obtains water mainly from food and metabolic processes.
A shelter is usually excavated near plants and occupied by a single adult. During the day the rodent remains hidden, avoiding heat and predators. Seeds are carried to stores rather than necessarily eaten immediately in the open.
The tail helps maintain balance during leaps. The cheek pouches are lined with hair and open outside the mouth.
