The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus) is a secretive North American snake, most often nocturnal. It inhabits damp forests, stones and ground cover. A pale neck ring contrasts with its dark back, while underparts may be brightly coloured.
A small head enters narrow spaces containing small prey. Beneath stones it finds warmth and cover without emerging onto open ground. It eats small amphibians, lizards and earthworms.
Some populations gather in shelters. Colour and size differ between subspecies.
