The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The yellow-banded poison frog inhabits humid northern South American forests. Bright yellow bands and spots contrast strongly with its black body.
Active by day, it travels among litter, roots and fallen plant fragments. Small insects, including ants and termites, provide food. Damp refuges prevent dehydration and small water bodies matter for offspring development.
Males call and hold territories. After eggs develop, tadpoles enter water and remain until metamorphosis. The bright pattern is associated with chemical defence: skin substances help deter attackers.
