Degu — size comparison — facts and sources

The common degu is a social rodent originating in Chile. It inhabits areas with shrubby and grassy vegetation where it can use burrows. It moves on the ground and climbs surrounding structures, exploiting food resources within its range.

It takes mainly plant parts, including leaves, grasses and seeds. Continuously growing incisors help break up food. Activity often occurs by day, although its pattern also depends on temperature and surrounding conditions.

Degus maintain social contact, communicate through sounds and scent and share burrow systems. The tail aids balance, but its skin is easily damaged. A lost tuft does not regrow in its previous form.
