Dall’s porpoise — size comparison — facts and sources
Dall’s porpoise lives in cold North Pacific waters, often above great depths. It has a stocky black-and-white body and small head. Despite its substantial outline, it is a very fast swimmer among small cetaceans.
It eats fish and squid. Rapid surfacing throws a characteristic fan of water called a “rooster tail”. This may help identification at a distance before exact colouring is visible. It is also encountered riding ships’ bow waves.
