Yellow mongoose — size comparison — facts and sources
The yellow mongoose has yellowish fur, a bushy tail and rounded ears. It inhabits semi-arid southern African savannas and scrub. It may feed alone but uses shared burrows at night; young from earlier litters help raise later offspring.
It eats chiefly insects and also small vertebrates. Burrow systems may be used for extended periods, with resting sites and offspring chambers. Southern-range animals often have bushier, pale-tipped tails, while other populations may have shorter hair.
