The culpeo inhabits an extensive area of western and southern South America. It uses mountain landscapes, open steppes, scrub and some forests. Environmental conditions and available foods differ markedly between parts of its range.
It hunts rodents, lagomorphs and birds, supplementing its diet with fruit and carrion. Human-introduced species play an important role in some places.
It leads a secretive life and is sometimes seen alone while travelling between feeding places. Feeding and resting depend on conditions within a particular habitat. Keen smell helps locate resources, and extensive movements link feeding-site visits with use of terrain cover.
