Timber rattlesnake — size comparison — facts and sources

The timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) inhabits eastern United States forests and rocky slopes, with crevices providing winter shelters. Dark cross-bands break up its outline among leaves and rocks.

In the warm season it seeks suitable hunting sites alone. For winter it returns to rocky shelters that many snakes may share.

It eats small mammals and sometimes birds. Males engage in ritual combat. Venom immobilises prey, which is swallowed whole.
