Eastern diamondback rattlesnake — size comparison — facts and sources

The eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) inhabits dry pine habitats in the southeastern United States. It uses dry pine areas, scrub and burrows.

Heat-sensitive facial pits help detect mammals. It usually hunts alone near cover. Its rattle may warn, but the number of segments is not a reliable age counter.

It eats small mammals. Males compete for access to mates. The female gives birth to live young that disperse after some time.
