The coypu originates in South America. Populations established through escapes and releases of farmed animals also occur outside its native area. It selects wetlands, lakeshores and quiet waterways with lush vegetation. It may dig resting burrows in riverbanks.
It eats mainly aquatic plants: stems, leaves and roots, and sometimes bark. It uses logs and other emergent places as feeding platforms. Swimming allows access to plants unreachable from shore, while vegetation cover provides shelter near feeding sites.
Breeding may take place at different times of year depending on conditions and food. The female cares for young born furred and with open eyes.
