Common wombat — size comparison — facts and sources

The common wombat is a stocky, powerfully muscled marsupial adapted for digging. Its forefeet have broad claws, and the female’s pouch opens backwards, preventing soil from entering as she digs. It spends the day in a cool burrow and emerges to feed after dark.

Its teeth grow throughout life and wear down against tough plant food. Extensive tunnels help it avoid extreme temperatures and fires.

The wombat usually moves slowly but can accelerate sharply over a short distance. Coat colour varies between populations, from sandy through grey to almost black. Very thick skin and cartilage cover its rear, which can serve as a difficult barrier to penetrate inside a tunnel.
