The common vampire bat is a Central and South American bat that feeds on other animals' blood. It can also move effectively on the ground, helping it approach a feeding or resting host. It is active mainly at night and spends the day in shelters such as caves, tree hollows and sheltered parts of buildings.
It uses its senses and echolocation to navigate. It cuts the skin and laps blood from a small wound.
Individuals maintain group contacts and may share food with other colony members. This behaviour matters when some bats have failed to obtain food during the night's foraging.
