The common toad (Bufo bufo) is an amphibian of European forests, gardens and scrub. Warty skin and glands behind the eyes create its characteristic appearance.
Outside breeding it stays on land, catching prey with its protrusible tongue. It feeds chiefly at night, most often walking rather than making long jumps. By day it seeks cool, damp cover.
It eats invertebrates. Spawn is laid in long strings. Spring migrations to water may cross roads cutting through traditional routes.
