Common squirrel monkey — size comparison — facts and sources

The common squirrel monkey moves along branches in tropical South American forests. It uses various canopy levels but often feeds in the middle layer. Agile running and leaping help it follow the group through complex forest space.

It eats mainly fruit and invertebrates. Individuals spread out while searching for food, remaining in contact with neighbours. Fruiting-tree availability changes the group's routes. The long tail aids balance but does not act as a prehensile extra limb while travelling.

The infant remains in its mother's care, and relationships between females matter in social life. Subgroup composition may change during the breeding season.
