Common shrew — size comparison — facts and sources

The common shrew searches for food in litter, grass and other sheltered places near the ground. It uses varied habitats provided it finds invertebrates and retreats. It may rest in passages left by other small animals rather than build extensive burrows itself.

It hunts insects, spiders and earthworms. Rapid metabolism requires frequent eating, so it is active in short bouts both by day and night. Smell and touch help locate prey hidden in the substrate.

It usually lives alone and reacts aggressively to neighbours. After weaning the young disperse and occupy their own places. In winter it reduces its maintenance costs, partly through seasonal shrinkage of some organs. It does not, however, enter prolonged hibernation and must still obtain food regularly.
