The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The common ostrich is the largest living bird. It inhabits African savannas and semi-deserts, where long legs support fast running. Each foot has only two toes. Males have black plumage with white wing and tail feathers; females are grey-brown. Large eyes and a raised head help detect danger above low vegetation.
It mainly eats plant material, seeds and fruit, supplemented by invertebrates. Outside breeding, it travels in groups, sometimes near large herbivores. Shared vigilance improves early predator detection. Wings help balance rapid turns and serve in courtship displays. Eggs are laid in a shallow ground hollow, and chicks soon follow adults, which guide and protect them.
