Common noctule — size comparison — facts and sources
The common noctule has short rounded ears and smooth brown fur. Long narrow wings favour fast flight in open space, often above treetops. It may emerge before complete darkness.
It chiefly catches food in flight. Echolocation detects prey and obstacles. Insects flying over meadows and water are important food.
It usually rests in tree hollows, including woodpecker holes. Colonies may change roosts, and females carry their youngest offspring. In winter it uses sheltered hibernation sites.
