The common eland (Taurotragus oryx) is a large antelope of eastern and southern Africa. It inhabits savannas, open woodland, steppes and semi-deserts. The coat is usually fawn, although older males may become distinctly grey. A strongly developed dewlap emphasises their massive forequarters.
It eats grasses, leaves, shoots, fruit and roots. It uses open feeding grounds and shrubby areas, with diet changing seasonally.
It usually lives in herds with changing membership. Females with young and adult males do not always travel together, and older males are more often solitary. Vertical stripes become less distinct with age.
