It eats leaves, young shoots, fallen fruit and underground plant parts. It also takes occasional animal food. Its varied diet helps it live in habitats whose resources change with the season and rainfall.

It may be active in the morning, evening or cooler night hours. During the day it may rest in sheltered places, beside fallen trees or in denser vegetation. Males and females use established areas.
