Common dolphin — size comparison — facts and sources
The common dolphin has a slender body, elongated beak and distinctive hourglass flank pattern. A dark back adjoins lighter yellowish and grey areas. It inhabits warm and temperate waters, often far offshore.
A sociable, active swimmer, it occurs in large groups. Feeding dolphins concentrate and pursue fish schools together and also catch squid. Rapid turns and leaps reveal some surface activity, although most pursuit takes place underwater.
