The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The common bottlenose dolphin inhabits warm and temperate seas, both near coasts and offshore. It has a grey body, a short, distinct beak and a curved dorsal fin. The fin’s shape and scars often allow individuals to be recognised during long-term studies.
It feeds on fish, squid and crustaceans. Echolocation detects prey even in murky water. Feeding methods differ between populations, and some skills are learned from other group members. Dolphins may hunt alone or cooperate.
They live in changing groups whose membership depends on food, breeding and social relationships. Whistles maintain contact, with some acting as individual identification signals. Females care for calves over a long period while the young learn to navigate their surroundings and catch prey independently.
