Basiliscus basiliscus
wzdłuż osi ciała · od pyska do końca ogonaMeasurement: side
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The common basilisk (Basiliscus basiliscus) inhabits riverside forests of Central America and northwestern South America. Males have pronounced crests on the head, back and tail.
Long hindlimbs and enlarged toes allow brief escapes across water; once submerged it continues as a proficient swimmer. It feeds and basks near water by day and spends the night higher on branches.
It eats arthropods, small vertebrates, fruit and flowers. Males compete for females, which lay eggs on land. Insects make up more of young animals' diets than those of adults.
