Commerson's dolphin — size comparison — facts and sources
Commerson's dolphin has a short, compact body and striking black-and-white colouring. It inhabits shallow cold waters around Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the Falklands. A separate population occurs around the Kerguelen Islands, thousands of kilometres from its South American range.
It eats fish, squid, crustaceans and other small bottom-associated animals. An agile swimmer, it readily uses waves and currents. Small groups occur close to shore in channels and estuaries where strong water movement concentrates potential prey.
