The chuckwalla (Sauromalus ater) is a herbivorous lizard of rocky Mojave and Sonoran deserts in the United States and Mexico. Its broad, flattened body slips into rock crevices.
It feeds by day after basking, eating leaves, flowers and fruit. When disturbed it hides in a crevice and inflates its body, bracing against the walls and making extraction difficult for a predator.
