Chinese hamster — size comparison — facts and sources

The Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) originates in dry areas of northern China and Mongolia. It is a small rodent associated with steppes and scrub. It spends most of its life near the ground, using burrows that provide cover during rest and rearing.

It gathers seeds and other available plant parts, supplementing its diet with animal food. Spacious cheek pouches allow transport of food to shelter. Burrow stores help it access food even when surface excursions are difficult.

Activity centres mainly on the dark part of the day. It is also kept as a pet and used in research. Some works treat griseus as a separate species, others as a unit within Cricetulus barabensis.
