The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Chinese giant salamander is a large tailed amphibian associated with mountain rivers in China. It selects cool waters with stony bottoms and shelters among boulders. A flattened head, small eyes and broad body suit life near the bottom, often in dim places.
It is a predator active chiefly at night. It catches fish, crustaceans and other aquatic animals while remaining near cover. Wrinkled skin increases the area available for gas exchange. Unlike many salamander larvae, adults lack visible feathery external gills.
During breeding a male occupies an underwater shelter and tends eggs laid there. Gentle flow and suitable bottom structure matter. Modern research reveals complex diversity within the Chinese giant salamanders formerly treated broadly as one group, making population origin important in conservation and research.
