Common chameleon — size comparison

The common chameleon inhabits the Mediterranean region and adjoining parts of Africa and the Middle East. It has a laterally flattened body, a prehensile tail and toes arranged in opposing groups. This build enables careful movement along thin branches, where it spends much of its life.

It is active by day and usually lives alone. It alternates slow movement with long stillness, watching its surroundings with largely independently moving eyes. When an insect comes close enough it catches it with a rapid tongue projection.

Colour changes relate to temperature, arousal and interactions with other individuals, among other factors. They are not simple copying of the background colour. The female lays eggs in the ground, where embryos develop.
