Chacoan mara — size comparison — facts and sources

The Chacoan mara inhabits the Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. It uses open habitats and scrub. It shelters in burrows dug itself or abandoned by other animals, including viscachas. It is active by day and particularly easy to observe in the morning and towards evening.

It eats leaves and herbs, as well as grasses, fruit, seeds and woody plant parts. In the rainy season it uses more fresh grasses and herbs. During the dry season succulent food, including cacti and bromeliads, becomes important.

It lives in pairs or family groups. Resting individuals may face different directions, helping monitor the surroundings. Young play through leaps, turns and runs, sometimes joined by adult males. Scent and sand bathing also feature in daily contacts.
