It feeds chiefly in the morning and late afternoon, gathering food with its hands. Fruit is supplemented by flowers, leaves, fungi and invertebrates according to availability.
In danger it may freeze and hide among vegetation. It uses trees but also moves on the ground and can swim. It usually lives in small groups.
