Cranwell’s horned frog — size comparison — facts and sources

Cranwell’s horned frog comes from South America’s Gran Chaco. Small projections above the eyes give horned frogs their name. Brown or greenish patterns blend into soil and fallen leaves.

It inhabits landscapes with distinct wet and dry seasons. Partly buried, it ambushes insects, other invertebrates and small vertebrates coming within reach of its mouth.

Breeding is associated with temporary pools appearing after rain. Tadpoles develop in water, while metamorphosed animals live close to the ground.
