The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Central American agouti inhabits forests and scrub with fruiting trees. It moves efficiently on the ground and can flee abruptly when threatened. It usually feeds by day, but strong human pressure may shift activity towards night.
Fruit and seeds form its dietary basis. It can respond to falling-fruit sounds and follow beneath monkeys knocking food down. It buries surplus seeds as stores for shortages. Unrecovered stores may germinate, so this behaviour contributes to tree dispersal.
The basic social unit is a pair occupying a shared area. Individuals defend food and retreats against other agoutis. Warning signals include calls, erected fur and hind-foot stamping. It often holds food in its front paws, turning it while peeling.
