Campbell’s dwarf hamster — size comparison — facts and sources
Campbell’s dwarf hamster is a small rodent associated with Asian steppes. The wild type has a brownish back with a narrow dark stripe and a paler underside. It is sometimes confused with the winter white dwarf hamster but is a distinct species.
In the wild it uses burrows and is chiefly nocturnal. Seeds and other plant parts form most of its diet, supplemented by small animals. Cheek pouches carry food to burrow stores; the burrow also protects against weather and predators.
Captive-bred varieties may differ in colour from wild individuals.
