The black-tufted marmoset inhabits Brazilian forests and woodland. It has black ear tufts, a greyish body and ringed tail. It is a diurnal, arboreal monkey living in small family groups. Claw-like nails grip bark; its tail serves balance and does not grasp branches.
Tree sap and gums are important foods, but the diet also includes fruit and insects. Both parents and older offspring help care for young. Separate families may use the same exudate-producing trees.
