Bushpig — size comparison — facts and sources

The bushpig uses highly varied African environments, from wet forests to scrub and field margins. Its presence may be easier to recognise from feeding signs than direct observation, as it often travels under vegetation cover and when people are less active.

It digs into soil for roots, larvae and other foods. It also eats fruit, and diet changes with seasonal resource availability. It lives in family groups; the male helps defend and care for offspring. The young gradually learn routes and safe resting places.

In agricultural landscapes it may feed on crops, causing conflict with residents. The distribution of dense retreats influences the routes groups use to reach fields.
