European green toad — size comparison — facts and sources
The European green toad occurs in Central and Eastern Europe and neighbouring areas. Its skin is uneven, and the parotoid glands typical of toads are visible behind its eyes.
It favours open, relatively warm areas. It may occupy places with loose soil, including human-altered sites, provided there are hiding places and water for breeding. It feeds mainly at dusk and at night, catching insects and other small invertebrates.
The female lays spawn in water, and tadpoles remain there until metamorphosis. Adults spend most of their time on land. Older accounts of the green toad covered a broad population complex; modern classifications separate several distinct species from it.
