Brown-throated sloth — size comparison — facts and sources
The brown-throated sloth spends most of its life suspended beneath branches. Long, curved claws act as hooks, while a slow metabolism allows it to live on an energy-poor leaf diet. Algae grow in grooves in its hair and may give the fur a greenish tint that improves camouflage.
It moves awkwardly on the ground but swims well. Its hair grows in a direction that helps rain drain off its inverted body.
The sloth usually descends only once every few days to defecate at the base of a trunk. On the ground it is more exposed to predators.
