The brown rat spread from Asia with human transport and settlement. It uses buildings, fields, watersides and underground passages. Access to protected shelters and regular food allows it to inhabit highly varied urban and rural landscapes.
It feeds mainly after dark. It is omnivorous, with a diet depending on locally available resources. It swims well and can remember routes to feeding sites. It navigates using smell and touch, travelling familiar paths between retreats.
It lives in groups with complex social contacts. Females rear young in sheltered nests, and abundant resources favour frequent breeding. Their numbers also depend on waste, water and safe resting places.
