The brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea) is a southern African carnivore. It inhabits dry savannas, desert scrub and coasts. Long, dark brown fur contrasts with a paler neck coat, while its sloping back and massive forequarters resemble other hyenas' build.
Carrion forms much of its food. It also uses other available food sources and along coasts may search around marine-animal colonies. It usually feeds alone, travelling through its area in search of scattered resources.
It lives in clans whose members use a shared area and help rear young. Solitary foraging therefore coexists with social living. Scents and calls convey information about other animals' presence.
