Broad-snouted caiman — size comparison — facts and sources
The broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) inhabits eastern South American wetlands, including swamps, densely vegetated marshes and fresh waters. Its short, broad head distinguishes it from narrower-snouted caimans. Powerful jaws crush shells among other foods, and aquatic vegetation provides resting cover.
Where its range overlaps with the yacare caiman, it also occupies heavily vegetated waters. It eats molluscs, crustaceans, fish and other animals.
The nest is a mound; the female stays near the eggs and helps hatchlings reach water.
