The maned sloth lives in Atlantic Forest trees. It has grey-brown fur and a dark mane, particularly conspicuous in males. Three curved claws on each limb help it hold onto branches.
Its fur grows in a direction that assists water drainage while hanging. A greenish tint may come from organisms growing on the hairs. It spends much time resting and moves cautiously between feeding sites. It eats chiefly leaves and soft plant parts.
