Bobcat — size comparison — facts and sources

The bobcat occurs from southern Canada through the United States to Mexico. It uses forests, scrub and semi-desert areas containing sheltered places. It rests in rock crevices and hollow trunks among other sites. A vegetation mosaic facilitates concealed movement.

It often hunts at dusk or night. It stalks rabbits, rodents and other available animals as closely as possible. It uses terrain cover, alert hearing and rapid attack. Diet composition varies regionally and with seasonal prey availability.

It usually lives alone and leaves scent marks within its occupied area. Males and females meet during breeding. The mother rears kittens in a retreat and later takes them on excursions. Before dispersing and hunting independently, young gradually learn their surroundings and hunting behaviours.
